When the Hackney Empire first opened in 1901, it boasted electric lights and central heating. Over a hundred years on, and after an extensive restoration and refurbishment programme, the theatre is once again the pride of London’s East End - as well as a finalist in the Heritage category of The National Lottery Awards 2014.
The lottery funds invested mean audiences can continue to enjoy performances from some of the nation’s greatest entertainers, from household names such as Lenny Henry (pictured above) to new talent discovered through the theatre’s flagship Artist Development Programme. We went along to find out why the Hackney Empire is such a great place to put on a show.
