How you helped Keisha get her life back on track and help others to avoid homelessness
According to a recent report by Shelter, there are over 320,000 homeless people in the UK today with numbers increasing by 13,000 in the last year. Becoming homeless is often a long journey and one that, with the right support, can be prevented.
National Lottery funded Roundabout is Sheffield’s youth homeless charity providing shelter, support and life skills to young people aged 16-24 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. A key part of the project is focused on the prevention of homelessness by offering a mediation service to help families get back together. This service allows families to listen to each other through the use of trained peer educators, who are current and former Roundabout beneficiaries under 25, who have experience in these delicate and complex situations.
Keisha found herself homeless after falling out with both of her parents. But with the support of her case worker at Roundabout, she has been able to turn her life around and now has a place to call home, is back at school and helping to promote the work of Roundabout by visiting other schools in the area.
Speaking of the funding that Roundabout received, Keisha says “a big thank you to National Lottery players, because if it wasn’t for the support and the help from you guys, I wouldn’t have had the support I needed and been able to get the resources I needed to do things like school”.
Last year National Lottery players supported over 220 homeless projects with just under £40Million of funding, helping people like Keisha have a roof over their heads and a place to call home.
