Winners and Good Causes

An amazing year for millionaires and good causes

It’s been an amazing 2019 for National Lottery players with new records set, a wealth of new millionaires made and even more money raised for good causes.

In an extraordinary draw on the 8th October, an anonymous ticket-holder won a staggering £170,221,000 on EuroMillions – not only the largest jackpot ever paid out in the UK, but also instantly making the player the 703rd richest person in the country.

Across all National Lottery games, 797 tickets won a prize of over £50Thousand in 2019, including 364 players who became millionaires – that’s a millionaire for practically every day of the year.

And jackpots weren’t the only way people were winning – around £30Million was raised every week for good causes, enabling the 565,000th National Lottery grant to be awarded to the UK.

This year marked a monumental anniversary for The National Lottery as we officially celebrated our 25th Birthday. Thanks to you, we have been able to raise £40 billion for good causes since 1994. This includes over £6 billion for sports projects and £3 billion for youth projects. The good cause grants have been able to support over 29,000 veteran projects and over 35,000 projects helping to preserve treasured and historic sites.

Andy Carter, Senior Winners’ Advisor at The National Lottery said, “It has been an amazing year of millionaire-making and birthday celebrations. We have been lucky enough to meet and pay every single one of the 797 big winners and help them start to enjoy their life-changing win. This year, we introduced an exciting new game – Set For Life, which is designed to help winners tick off their bucket list through monthly pay-outs.”

“Thank you to everyone who has bought a ticket, scratchcard or played a National Lottery game online in 2019 and for the past 25 years. By playing National Lottery games, you continue to help support projects making a difference to millions of people across the country.”

To mark the end of an amazing year, we took to the streets to test people’s knowledge of winners and good causes – here’s what they had to say.
