Reward for dog who helped £1Million winner cope with ‘ruff’ patches

A loyal German Shepherd called Rosco is set to get his paws on a special treat after owner Maxine Lloyd won an amazing £1Million prize on a National Lottery Instant Win Game.

Maxine, an NHS worker from Kettering, was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. She said Rosco’s ability to comfort her during her treatment had earned him a special canine treat now she’s a National Lottery millionaire.

Maxine said, “He’s like my therapy dog. When I feel rough, he lays his head on me gently and when I am feeling sorry for myself, he flashes his big brown eyes and encourages a much needed walk for us both. He is definitely getting a big treat… maybe a doggy ‘Pawsecco’.”

Maxine, 50, and her partner Wayne Tilbury, 57, won the £1Million top prize on The National Lottery’s £30Million Mega Cash Showdown Instant Win Game. The amazing windfall was a bright spot in what has been a turbulent period for the couple.

Maxine was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2021. She had surgery in December and on Christmas Eve received the fantastic news that the primary cancer had been successfully removed. Doctors recommended a course of chemotherapy and radiotherapy to reduce the risk of recurrence.

The National Lottery win came as she underwent the final part of her treatment – 2 weeks of radiotherapy. During her first session she heard her phone ping when her bank informed her the £1Million prize had been transferred to her account.

Maxine said, “The timing was surreal. I still can’t believe it…it’s like the stars were aligned after a difficult year.”

Recounting the story of how the pair found out they were winners, Maxine said, “Wayne was fast asleep after taking some medication for a nasty chest infection, but I was wide awake so decided to play a National Lottery game on my phone.

“After not very long it suggested I had won £1Million, but I kept on playing. Once I had finished the game clarified I had won big, but I didn’t know what to do so decided to wake Wayne.”

When Maxine told Wayne they had won £1Million on The National Lottery he half opened his eyes, said, “We can’t do anything about it now”, and drifted off. The next morning he asked, ‘Did I dream we won the Lottery last night or did it actually happen?!’”
