Family syndicate’s £1Million Lotto win is simply ‘clan-tastic’

Ever since David Cobb set up a family syndicate to play The National Lottery in 1994, he’s been convinced they’d score a big win one day.

Now, that day has arrived. David, his sisters Carol and Sandra and their 87-year-old mother Audrey, will each bank £250,000 after winning a £1Million Lotto prize in the draw on Saturday 22nd June 2024.

David, 67, said, “We’ve had some small wins along the way, but I was definitely the favourite big brother when I told my sisters they’d each be getting £250,000. It was an incredible moment, especially for my sister Carol who has had a few tough years. She burst into tears when she realised the size of the win and what it meant.”

The Cobbs’ amazing story began the day after the draw when David’s wife Linda checked the National Lottery app and saw a message alerting them to the win.

David said, “Linda always plays our own line and also kindly ensures our family syndicate line is played at the same time. She saw a message which said we’d won £1Million and calmly said to me, ‘David, I think you’d better have a look at this’.

“To be honest I was a bit grumpy and couldn’t be bothered to find my glasses, but when your wife of 45 years uses ‘that’ voice and says, ‘no, you really need to read this’, you know you’d better find your glasses!”

When David read the message he and Linda were lost for words. Knowing the National Lottery call centre would not be open at 7am on a Sunday morning they set off on a 10-mile bike ride to fill the time.

As soon as the amazing prize was confirmed, David visited his mum to tell her the incredible news. He said, “Mum immediately said ‘have we won the lottery’, so my plan was slightly scuppered! The next step was getting Carol and Sandra on a group call to break the news.

David said, “Sandra was at the allotment and was so shocked by the news a fellow gardener had to pop over to make sure she didn’t faint.”

Carol, 55, has already found a new home she’d like to buy. Sandra, 60, plans to share the win with family and treat herself to a new car.

David and his mum are still undecided what to do with their share of the £1Million prize, but making sure their family benefits is a priority.

David said, “I’ve always been the one to say we will win. In fact, I’ve been waiting for this moment ever since we set up the syndicate a few months after the first Lotto draw in November 1994. To be able to share it with my family is the icing on the cake, and to see that it will help the wider family is the cherry on top.”
