Tesco bakery syndicate waits a month for their dough
A Lotto ticket which waited a month to be checked turned out to be worth £1Million. The big win is now being enjoyed by the 12 members of the Tesco Chester bakery syndicate.
Syndicate leader, Cath Batten, only discovered their Lotto raffle win when she went to buy the groups next set of tickets.
Cath said, “I always buy our tickets for the month ahead. I had checked our numbers online but for some reason I had forgotten to check the raffle code. I didn’t think it was a winning ticket but when I went to buy the next month of tickets for the syndicate I thought I had better double check.
“The machine made a funny noise and the shop assistant said to me you need to call Camelot, you must have won more than £500! I just could not believe it and all I could think about was how much have we won?”
The syndicate of 12, who work at Tesco in Chester, have banked £83,333.33 each. The syndicate all met while working in the bakery at Tesco. Several of them have gone on to other jobs within the store but they still continue to play Lotto together every week.
Cath, who has been running the ‘One Million Pound Tesco Bakery Syndicate’ for the last 6 years, added, “I called Camelot to check if this was really a winning ticket and when it was confirmed it was £1Million I just went silent. I had to repeatedly ask the lady at the end of the phone to confirm it really was £1Million!”
Special moment
Sharing the news with her fellow syndicate members was a moment Cath said she will never forget.
“Telling my friends and colleagues we had won £1Million was almost as special as winning the money. This amount of money is just life changing for all of us. We are all still trying to take it in and thinking about how we will spend our new found fortune. It still doesn’t seem real for any of us.”
On her spending plans Cath said, “I think a holiday abroad is high on the shopping list but looking after my family is my top priority.”
And she says the syndicate has no plans to stop playing now and have already got their tickets for the next 4 weeks. “We just feel that if ordinary people like us can win, there is no reason we cannot win again. Winning the lottery is just the most amazing feeling ever!”
