Family fortunes for mother and son

A dinner lady who worked throughout the pandemic making packed lunches for children entitled to free school meals and her son, a warehouse worker, have won the top prize on the £100,000 A Month For A Year Scratchcard from The National Lottery.

Sue, 48, and Connor Rees, 24, from Wales, have a family tradition to buy 2 Scratchcards every time they go shopping together and always split their winnings. When the mother and son scratched off their incredible £100,000 a month for a year win, they were astonished.

Connor said, “Mum has always been convinced she’d win The National Lottery one day but I’m a bit more sceptical and never thought it would happen. We took the Scratchcard straight back into the shop and the shopkeeper confirmed we’d won big, we just couldn’t believe it. I still can’t really!”

But the pair insist the win won’t change anything. Sue, who has worked at a local primary school for over 17 years, and also runs its breakfast club, has no plans to give up either job. Sue said, “I love that school, I couldn’t leave. I’m going to make sure that my family is well looked after but I’m definitely going to keep my feet firmly on the ground.”

That’s an apt phrase for Sue who is terrified of flying so has no plans to jet off when travel restrictions ease. Instead, she’s hoping to go to Disneyland Paris with her extended family in 2022, looking to arrive in style on the train.

Connor, who works for the same company as his dad (he loads the vans, while his dad is a delivery driver), has some more unusual plans for his half of the winnings. Connor said: “I live with my family at the moment but as soon as I’m living on my own, I’m going to treat myself to some new pets. I’ve never wanted a dog or a cat but I’m going get a bearded lizard and chameleon. I can’t wait.”

As well as his long awaited reptile purchases, Connor is looking forward to spoiling his dad with a bucket list holiday, when it is safe and allowed to do so. He said, “I’ve always wanted to take my dad to New Zealand. We have cousins there and we’re constantly texting about the rugby so, as soon as we can, I’m planning to go and visit them. I’ve got it all planned out. We’ll fly to Hawaii and spend some time there, then head on to New Zealand and come back via Hong Kong. Mum doesn’t fly so she won’t mind if the two of us go on our own!”
