Lost and found: Solving the Set For Life mystery

The mystery surrounding the record-breaking number of second tier prize winners in the Set For Life draw on 15th June has been solved and it all links back to one of television’s most influential drama series.

In the 15th June, draw one lucky winner won the top prize of £10Thousand a month for 30 years. But the really extraordinary result was the fact that there were a record breaking 10 winners of the second tier prize of £10Thousand a month for a year.

Previously, the most winners of the second tier prize in a single draw had been 4.

Delving into the mystery of the 15th June draw we discovered nearly all of the second tier winners selected their own lucky numbers. Indeed only two winners of the second tier prize picked a Lucky Dip.

So what’s going on? Careful analysis of the 10 winners reveals a weird connection with Lost, the hit supernatural American TV series which premiered 16 years ago.

If you’re not 1 of the millions of people who watched the show, Lost was a 6-season blockbuster about the survivors of an airliner that crashes on a mysterious island in the South Pacific. One of the more memorable episodes – Season 1, Episode 18 to be precise – describes how a crash survivor called Hugo ‘Hurley’ Reyes won a lottery jackpot of $114Million using the numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42.

The Set For Life numbers drawn on Monday 15th June were 04, 15, 21, 23, 42 and the Life Ball was 02. As you can see, 4 of the 5 main numbers matched by the 10 winners in the 15th June draw are Lost numbers.

Hurley’s numbers might be a popular choice among National Lottery players it seems. In the 15th June draw alone, more than 200 people played some combination of 5 of the 6 Lost numbers. The most popular combination played using the Lost numbers is 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 and 04 as the Life Ball, which was played by 126 players in the 15th June draw.

Camelot’s Andy Carter, Senior Winners’ Advisor at The National Lottery, said, “Wow, the secret of the 15th June draw is finally revealed. It seems this TV show has consciously or subconsciously engrained these numbers into many of our players’ heads. Many people have lucky numbers and it seems that the traditional lucky 7 or birthdays route is being challenged by numbers from popular culture.

“However you choose your numbers, we can’t wait to start paying these prizes and supporting our new winners. And remember, if you loved Lost, check your tickets online or on the National Lottery app!”
