BFI’s Escapes

Pyjama drama: free previews of South Korean horror film Sleep

Want a sneak preview of Sleep, a spine-tingling new horror film that puts a very sinister spin on sleepwalking? Well, thanks to funding made possible by National Lottery players, free screenings of this brand new South Korean chiller will take place as part of Escapes, an initiative supported by the BFI (awarding National Lottery funding).

Escapes, which returns on 8th July 2024, is designed to encourage everyone to discover, or rediscover, independent cinema. As part of Escapes, more than 16,000 free tickets will be available to special previews of Sleep at participating cinemas right across the UK.

Sleep is a horror-thriller about an escalating case of sleepwalking and the effects it has on a happily married couple. It’s directed by Jason Yu, the assistant director to Oscar-winning director Bong Joon-ho, whose films include Parasite, Snowpiercer and The Host.

Sleep stars Lee Sun-kyun (best known for his leading role in Parasite) as a sleep-walking husband opposite Jung Yu-mi, who plays his pregnant wife. Boon Joon-ho described Yu’s film as “The most unique horror film and the smartest debut film I’ve seen in 10 years.”

Escapes is on a mission to bring new audiences to local cinemas by offering the chance for everyone, especially those who rarely prioritise a trip to the cinema, the opportunity to watch the film for free and prior to its release date. Previous free screenings have included The Iron Claw, The Dead Don’t Hurt and Seize Them!
