BFI’s Escapes

Want a sneak preview of Kneecap, a new film about a Belfast hip-hop trio determined to rhyme in the Irish language?

This comedy-drama features the real life members of Kneecap as well as Irish star Michael Fassbender. When it made its debut at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival in January, it was the first film in the Irish language to do so and picked up the NEXT Audience Award.

Thanks to funding made possible by National Lottery players, free screenings of Kneecap will take place 19th August 2024 as part of Escapes, an initiative supported by the BFI (awarding National Lottery funding). More than 16,000 free tickets will be available to special previews of the film at participating cinemas right across the UK.

Escapes is designed to encourage everyone to discover, or rediscover, independent cinema. To book your free tickets go to escapetothecinema.co.uk/tickets.

Kneecap is billed as a “thrill-ride around Belfast”, a mixture of fact and fiction starring Kneecap members Naoise Ó Cairealláin (“Móglaí Bap”), JJ Ó Dochartaigh (“Dj Provaí”) and Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh (“Mo Chara”) all playing themselves. The film charts their rise to fame and their newfound position as figureheads of a civil rights movement to save and reinvigorate their mother tongue.

NME described Kneecap as, “Chaotic in the best way.”

Escapes is on a mission to bring new audiences to local cinemas by offering the chance for everyone, especially those who rarely prioritise a trip to the cinema, the opportunity to watch the film for free and prior to its release date. Previous free screenings have included The Iron Claw, The Dead Don’t Hurt and Seize Them!
