Josh Kerr helps new generation of Scottish stars get on track

On the day that Josh Kerr won silver in the 1500m final at Paris 2024, athletes at the Scottish club where he honed his craft were clearly inspired by his achievement.

One young member of Edinburgh Athletic Club said, “It’s so inspiring seeing Josh competing at the Olympics. He’s already such a fantastic role model for everyone in Scotland and we’re so proud of him.”

Eric Fisher, who coached Josh from the age of 8, added, “It’s amazing how his performances on the biggest stage are inspiring the next generation of Scottish athletes.”

Inspiring performances by athletes like Josh are only part of the picture, of course. Scottish athletics has also been given vital support by funding made possible by National Lottery players.

Edinburgh Athletics Club received £8,250 of National Lottery funding and the club’s home, Meadowbank Sports Centre, received £5Million as part of a major refurbishment project.

Eric said, “Without support from The National Lottery, Josh wouldn’t be where he is now, and that funding is just as important at a grassroots level too.”

Lee McConnell, a Scottish 400m runner and the third most decorated Scottish track and field athlete of all time, added, “Funding from National Lottery players is literally helping athletes like Josh win medals for Team GB. But perhaps even more importantly, it allows the next generation to follow in his footsteps with funding into clubs and facilities like this.”

Thanks to National Lottery players our Olympic and Paralympic athletes are supported to live their dreams and make the nation proud. With more than £30Million a week raised for Good Causes, The National Lottery has enabled the UK to become a global force in athletics and has provided more opportunities for people inspired by athletes like Josh to take part in the sport.
